Rec Basketball
2023-2024 Season
The LSA basketball program is dedicated to developing all aspects of the player’s game and is designed to teach and develop fundamental basketball skills in a fun and instructional environment. All children are given the opportunity to play and learn, with the emphasis on sportsmanship.
Lincolnshire Sports Association offers basketball leagues for boys and girls in 1st through 8th grades. We also offer a kindergarten program run by Play Hard Hoops. The basketball season runs from early December through March and consists of 1 practice during the week and 1 weekend game. Games and practices will be held in the District 103 school gyms.
We will be offering two types of basketball programming for the 2023-2024 season, recreational and competitive – for age levels 1st Grade-3rd Grade.
While registering please select which of the two programs you feel provides the best benefit for your child’s experience in the program.
Recreational and competitive options are for 1st Grade-3rd Grade ONLY. Players at these age levels must select one of these two options when registering. 4th grade and older will not select an option.
Recreational
This program is for players age 1st-3rd grade who want to learn the game, develop their skills and have fun while doing it.
The program will feature one practice per week for 13 weeks.
The program will begin with a 1 hour basketball skills clinic run by Play Hard Hoops for each of the first 4 Saturdays of the season (Jan 13, 20, 27, Feb 3). Players will work on developing the fundamental skills required to play in basketball games including dribbling, passing, shooting, defensive fundamentals and development of player’s knowledge of the rules of basketball.
The final 6 Saturdays of the season (Feb 10, 17, 24, March 2, 9, 16) will feature one (1 hour) game a week coached by LSA volunteer coaches with teams formed based on an even balance of skill levels of all players in the recreational program.
Players will be separated by age group, age groups will not be combined unless there is a need.
Competitive
This program is for players who have basketball experience and are familiar with playing scored basketball games utilizing the rules of basketball.
The program will feature one practice per week for 13 weeks.
The program will feature 10 (1 hour) games each Saturday for 10 weeks (Jan 13-March 16) coached by LSA volunteer coaches with teams formed based on an even balance of skill levels of all players in the competitive program.
Players will be separated by age group, age groups will not be combined unless there is a need.
General Notes
Volunteer Coaches
We encourage and appreciate all volunteer coaches. LSA will be hosting a 1 hour coaches clinic on Saturday December 9 to provide a basic overview of how to coach basketball to the respective age levels in the LSA program. Attendance for volunteer coaches is not mandatory but is highly encouraged.
Skills Evaluation
LSA will be conducting a skills evaluation, with an option for players to attend on either Wednesday Nov 29th or Saturday December 2nd for 1 hour. LSA will run through some basic basketball drills to evaluate registered players with the intent of forming even and balanced teams for the season.
All registered players at all age levels (except kindergarten) must attend one session.
Kindergarten players do not need to attend skills evaluation.
Age Levels
We anticipate separating teams by grade level and will combine grade levels only if we don’t have enough registered players at a certain age level.
LSA Program will feature a separate girls and boys program (we will NOT be co-ed).
DIVISIONS AND PROGRAM
Kindergarten / 1st Grade / 2nd Grade / 3rd Grade / 4th Grade / 5th-6th Grade / 7th-8th Grade. Grades will be combined based on number of registered players.
Girls divisions and boys divisions will be separate.
Prior to the start of registration and while registration is ongoing, we are unable to determine exact practice days and times. This will be determined once registration is complete in mid-November. As part of the registration process, you will be able to indicate which days your child can and cannot practice. This will help us place your child on a team that practices on a day that works with your schedule. We will make every effort to accommodate each child’s schedule. We cannot make specific guarantees of practice days or times.
Space for house practices is very limited. We can only use the District 103 gyms when they are open and available to us. Because they are not available until 7:00 PM on weeknights (for Sprague and HD) and 6:30 PM (for DW), practices for basketball will tend to start later than other sports. This is the case for all ages, including 1st and 2nd graders. We make every effort to have the younger children practice earlier.
We will hold practices on every weeknight, including Fridays, if necessary. We have limited space therefore we may have to hold some practices on Friday nights.
We will offer an 8-week program for Kindergarten players. The program will be run by Play Hard Hoops and will focus on teaching the fundamentals of basketball and include some small games. Space is limited to 30 players for this program.
LSA basketball is an all-volunteer organization. We are always in need of volunteers to serve as Commissioners, Head Coach, or Assistant Coach. Our teams should ideally be led by parent-coaches, you can easily volunteer when you register your child, or by contacting our Director. If we aren’t able to find enough parent-volunteers to coach our teams, then we turn to high school volunteers to coach our kids in order for our program to run.
